“Padma Shri for Odissi Maestro Durga Charan Ranbir: A Life Devoted to Dance”

Celebrated Odissi maestro Shri Durga Charan Ranbir has been conferred the Padma Shri 2025, one of India’s highest civilian honours, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the art of Odissi dance. A revered dancer, choreographer, and guru, Shri Ranbir has played a pivotal role in preserving and popularizing the classical dance form of Odisha both in India and abroad.

Born in 1951 in Odisha, Shri Ranbir received rigorous training under the guidance of legendary gurus including Deba Prasad Das. He has performed at prestigious festivals across India, including the Konark Festival, Khajuraho Festival, and Natyanjali, as well as in over 30 countries, serving as a cultural ambassador for India’s classical arts.

Shri Ranbir is the founder of Nrutyayan, a renowned Odissi dance academy in Bhubaneswar, where he has trained hundreds of students—many of whom have gone on to become acclaimed performers and teachers themselves. His choreographic repertoire is vast, with over 100 Abhinayas, 20 Mangalacharanas, 18 Pallavis, and a number of original dance dramas that blend tradition with innovation.

His work not only preserves ancient techniques but also adds contemporary relevance, making Odissi more accessible and inspiring to modern audiences. His dedication has previously earned him accolades such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award.

Reacting to the Padma Shri announcement, Shri Ranbir said, “I feel truly blessed. This honour is not just mine but belongs to my students, my gurus, and the rich tradition of Odissi dance.”
