Veteran dancer, choreographer, and acclaimed actress Smt. Mamata Shankar has been awarded the Padma Shri 2025 for her remarkable contributions to the field of Art, marking a crowning moment in a career that has spanned nearly five decades and bridged classical traditions with modern expression.
Born into the illustrious Shankar family—daughter of the legendary Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar—Mamata Shankar grew up surrounded by rhythm, performance, and artistic rigor. Her early training at the Uday Shankar India Culture Centre laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to preserving and innovating Indian dance traditions.
She made her acting debut in Mrinal Sen’s National Award-winning film “Mrigayaa” (1976) and went on to work with cinematic legends like Satyajit Ray, Rituparno Ghosh, and Buddhadeb Dasgupta, earning acclaim for her graceful screen presence and expressive depth.
Mamata Shankar is also the founder of the Mamata Shankar Dance Company, known for fusing classical Indian, folk, tribal, and contemporary European dance elements into a unique performance style. Through her troupe and her Udayan Kala Kendra, she has trained generations of dancers and toured internationally, promoting India’s cultural wealth on the global stage.
Reacting to the honour, Shankar said:
“This is not just a personal recognition—it’s a tribute to my family, my gurus, and all those who have kept our traditions alive. I’ve simply done my work with honesty.”
She dedicated the award to her parents and late brother Ananda Shankar, a pioneering musician in fusion and electronic music.
