Celebrated actor, dancer, and cultural icon Shri Mithun Chakraborty has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for his outstanding contributions to the field of Art, representing West Bengal.
Fondly known as the “Disco King of Bollywood”, Mithun Chakraborty has entertained generations with his electrifying screen presence, versatile performances, and signature dance moves that revolutionized Indian cinema in the 1980s and beyond.
Born Gourang Chakraborty in Kolkata, Mithun made his acting debut with the National Award-winning film Mrigayaa (1976), establishing himself not only as a commercial superstar but also as a critically acclaimed performer. His work spans over 350 films in multiple Indian languages — from Hindi and Bengali to Odia and Bhojpuri.
With blockbuster hits like Disco Dancer, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Agneepath, and Guru, Mithun became a pan-India phenomenon, earning him a special place in the hearts of millions.
Mithun Chakraborty is a three-time National Film Award winner, lauded for his roles that blend mass appeal with artistic depth. Over the decades, he has also contributed to Indian television, mentored young talent, and remained active in public service and philanthropy.
By conferring the Padma Bhushan, the Government of India recognizes Mithun’s decades of excellence in film and arts, and his ability to bridge popular culture with national pride.
