World’s Largest Penny Monument Stands Tall in Woodruff

The World’s Largest Penny, a towering concrete tribute located in Woodruff in Oneida County, Wisconsin, is recognized as the world record holder for being the largest penny monument in the world. Standing 15 feet tall, 12 inches thick and weighing 17,452 pounds (nearly 9 tons), the oversized penny draws visitors from across the country to this Northwoods town.

Unveiled in 1954, the giant penny commemorates a remarkable 1953 fundraising effort known as the Million Penny Parade, organized to help build a much‑needed local hospital. The campaign was championed by Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb, a beloved physician affectionately known as “Dr. Kate”, and carried forward with spirited community support especially from local students who collected more than 1.7 million pennies from all 48 U.S. states.

Now a beloved roadside attraction near the Dr. Kate Museum, the record‑setting penny not only celebrates that historic community effort, but also stands as a symbol of collective spirit and the power of small contributions to achieve big goals.
