Magawa the Hero Rat The Tiny Lifesaver Who Cleared Over 100 Landmines

Magawa, an extraordinary African giant pouched rat, became a global symbol of courage after saving thousands of lives by detecting hidden landmines.

Trained by the non-profit organization APOPO, Magawa was deployed to identify buried explosives in former conflict zones. Using his exceptional sense of smell, he could detect traces of TNT, making him highly effective in locating dangerous landmines.

During his service, Magawa successfully discovered more than 100 landmines and explosive devices, helping clear approximately 225,000 square meters of land. His efficiency was remarkable—tasks that would take humans several days could be completed by him in just a few hours.

In recognition of his bravery, Magawa was awarded the prestigious PDSA Gold Medal in 2020 by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals. He became the first rat in history to receive this honor.

To commemorate his contribution, a large statue has been erected in Siem Reap, honoring the lives he helped save and his role in making communities safer.

Magawa retired in 2021 and passed away in January 2022, but his legacy continues to inspire the world.
