“Mohammed bin Salman Launches Landmark Development Project Near Mecca’s Grand Mosque”

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company, has launched the monumental “King Salman Gate” project, a transformative, mixed-use development set to vastly increase capacity for pilgrims near the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

The mega-project will add a massive 900,000 new indoor and outdoor praying spaces, significantly enhancing the infrastructure for the millions of worshippers who visit Islam’s holiest site annually for Hajj and Umrah.

The King Salman Gate project, spanning an immense 12 million square meters of Gross Floor Area adjacent to Al-Masjid Al-Haram (the Grand Mosque), is being developed by RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF).

  • Capacity Boost: The 900,000 additional prayer spaces will alleviate crowding and improve the overall pilgrim experience, aligning with the Kingdom’s goal to host over 30 million pilgrims annually by 2030.
  • Mixed-Use Destination: The integrated development will feature residential, hospitality (hotel), commercial, and cultural facilities, blending Makkah’s rich architectural heritage with modern urban design.
  • Economic Impact: The project is a key component of Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to generate more than 300,000 jobs by 2036.
  • Connectivity and Heritage: The development is designed to integrate seamlessly with public transportation networks to ensure easy access. It will also include the restoration and development of approximately 19,000 square meters of heritage sites.

The launch of the King Salman Gate marks a major milestone in modern city planning and sustainable development for the holy city, ensuring enhanced services and a richer spiritual journey for pilgrims from around the world.
