“Meet Namit Malhotra: The Indian VFX Visionary Behind Inception, Dune & Ramayana”

From the narrow lanes of Mumbai to the glittering stages of the Academy Awards, Namit Malhotra has journeyed far—both literally and creatively. Known as India’s own VFX genius, Malhotra has made waves in global cinema with his visionary work on films like Inception, Dune, Interstellar, Tenet, and now, the much-awaited Ramayana.

With a staggering 7 Oscars under his belt through his company’s groundbreaking work, Namit has not only put Indian talent on the Hollywood map, but also redefined the future of cinematic storytelling through visual effects.

Namit’s journey started in a garage-turned-studio in Mumbai in the early 2000s. With just passion, persistence, and a small team, he founded Prime Focus, a company that would go on to become a global VFX powerhouse.

“Back then, nobody thought India could be a VFX hub,” Namit recalls. “We didn’t wait for permission. We built our own stage.”

Today, Namit is the CEO of DNEG (Double Negative), one of the world’s top VFX and animation companies. DNEG has won multiple Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects for:

  • Inception
  • Interstellar
  • Ex Machina
  • Blade Runner 2049
  • First Man
  • Tenet
  • Dune

Under his leadership, DNEG has worked with top directors like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, pushing the boundaries of what’s visually possible on screen.

In a full-circle moment, Malhotra is now producing a live-action epic adaptation of the Ramayana, aiming to give the Indian classic the global scale and spectacle it deserves. The film, set to be VFX-heavy and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is being touted as India’s most ambitious mythological film ever.

Namit Malhotra’s story is one of ambition without limits. From a garage in Mumbai to the Oscars stage, he proves that Indian creativity and innovation have no borders—and the world is finally watching.
