Ghanaian Artist Transforms Waste into World-Record Handbag Project

“A Ghanaian artist is turning discarded textile waste into a bold symbol of sustainability by creating what is expected to become the world’s largest handbag, drawing international attention to fashion waste and environmental responsibility. The project is being developed in Accra by artist Emmanuel ‘DoTT’ Kunfaa under his platform Trash Of Fame.

Launched around Earth Day 2026, the initiative uses discarded secondhand clothing and textile scraps to transform waste into large-scale public art. The handbag is intended not only as a record attempt, but as a statement on overconsumption, pollution, and the need for circular fashion practices.

According to campaign organizers, Ghana receives huge volumes of used clothing imports each week, with a significant share eventually ending up in landfills, drains, or coastal waste sites. The project aims to spotlight that growing challenge while presenting creativity as part of the solution.

DoTT said the making process itself is central to the message—showing how discarded materials can be reimagined into something valuable, visible, and meaningful. Supporters say the effort places Ghana at the center of global conversations around sustainable design and environmental innovation.

Artists and environmental advocates have praised the handbag concept as an example of how culture can drive awareness more effectively than statistics alone.”
