Soufiane El Bakkali Targets World Record After Olympic Success

Moroccan Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali has set his sights on breaking the world record in the 3,000-metre steeplechase, declaring it as his top goal for the coming seasons.

Speaking about his ambitions in Rabat, Morocco, the star runner said he is determined to push his limits after already establishing himself as one of the world’s most dominant athletes in the event.

El Bakkali gained international recognition after winning Olympic gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and later repeating his success at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, ending years of dominance by East African runners in the steeplechase.

The Moroccan athlete said his training is now focused on achieving a historic milestone by surpassing the long-standing world record in the discipline.

Currently, the official 3,000-metre steeplechase world record is held by Saif Saaeed Shaheen, who set the mark in 2004 — a record that has remained unbeaten for two decades.

El Bakkali’s determination to challenge that record has excited athletics fans, who believe the Olympic champion could soon rewrite the history books if he continues his impressive form.
