A groundbreaking electric race car that once made headlines for breaking a speed record has now helped inspire the creation of a new motorsport championship. The electric Formula 4 electric race car, developed by ABB and FIA, previously set a world record for the fastest indoor land speed achieved by a vehicle.
The record-setting run took place at the ExCeL London exhibition centre, where the car reached an astonishing 218.71 km/h (135.9 mph) inside the massive indoor venue. The achievement demonstrated the incredible performance potential of electric racing technology.
Following the success and global attention generated by the record attempt, organizers have now announced plans to launch a dedicated electric Formula 4 championship. The series aims to provide young drivers with an opportunity to compete in fully electric single-seater race cars while promoting sustainable motorsport.
Officials from Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile say the new championship will focus on developing the next generation of drivers while also accelerating innovation in electric vehicle technology.
Motorsport analysts say the move reflects the growing shift toward electrification across the racing world, following the success of series such as Formula E.
