World’s Largest Spool of Thread

Quilting enthusiasts and curious travelers alike are flocking to Hamilton, Missouri, to witness a truly monumental tribute to the town’s beloved craft culture: the World’s Largest Spool of Thread. This towering installation has become a standout roadside attraction outside the Missouri Quilt Museum, celebrating both community spirit and the art of sewing.

Unveiled in 2018, the gigantic spool measures an eye-catching 22 feet tall with a diameter of 8 feet, dwarfing any conventional spool found in a sewing room. Wrapped with over one million yards of high-quality AURIFIL thread, the spool continues to grow as visitors are encouraged to bring and add their own thread to the already vibrant display.

The creation of this record-breaking spool was made possible through a collaboration between local craftsmen, the Missouri Quilt Museum, and contributions from visitors and sponsors notably the Italian thread company Aurifil, which provided the initial thread donation.

Hamilton, a small city in northern Caldwell County often referred to as a haven for quilting and textile lovers, has embraced its identity as the “Quilting Capital of the World”, thanks in part to attractions like the spool and the robust local quilting industry.

Today, the World’s Largest Spool of Thread stands not only as a whimsical photo opportunity but also as a symbol of creativity, community engagement, and the enduring appeal of handcrafted art. Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or simply exploring quirky Americana, this colorful icon offers an unforgettable stop on any Midwest itinerary.
