A monumental piece of patriotic art now holds the title of the world’s largest knitted American flag after being completed at The Momentary in Bentonville, Arkansas. The massive flag measures 25 feet wide by 15 feet tall and was created on site as part of a special Independence Day celebration.
Led by multidisciplinary artist Dave Cole, the oversized flag was knitted using a dramatic setup known as The Knitting Machine, where telephone poles served as giant knitting needles and excavators acted as the arms that maneuvered them. Beginning work on July 1, Cole and his team completed the final stitches during the July 4th festivities, drawing crowds to witness the world‑record‑setting spectacle.
Cole said the project took about a week and required more than 455 individual stitches, a testament to both his artistic ambition and the community spirit surrounding the event. He praised the local art scene and generous hospitality he experienced in Northwest Arkansas while working on the installation.
Once complete, the giant knitted flag was displayed in The Momentary’s North Courtyard through mid‑July, serving as a striking symbol of national pride woven together with creative ingenuity.
