PM Modi Unveils India’s First Private Orbital Rocket Vikram-I at Skyroot’s New Infinity Campus

In a landmark moment for India’s rapidly accelerating private space sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Skyroot Aerospace’s Infinity Campus in Hyderabad, alongside the formal unveiling of Vikram-I, the nation’s first privately built orbital rocket. The state-of-the-art, 200,000 sq ft campus marks a significant leap in India’s ambition to become a global hub for commercial space launches.

The newly unveiled Vikram-I rocket is engineered to deploy up to 300 kg of payloads into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and is built with a fully carbon-fiber body, enabling higher structural efficiency and lighter mass. The rocket also supports multiple satellite insertions in a single mission, making it an attractive option for global customers in the booming small-satellite market.

Skyroot’s Infinity Campus is designed to support end-to-end development, integration, testing, and manufacturing of launch vehicles. With advanced assembly lines and automated processes, the facility aims to achieve an unprecedented milestone: producing one orbital rocket every month, significantly boosting India’s domestic and commercial launch capacity.

Founded by former ISRO scientists Pawan Chandana and Bharath Daka, Skyroot Aerospace first made headlines in 2022 with the launch of Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed sub-orbital rocket. Vikram-I builds on that success, incorporating innovations that allow rapid 24-hour assembly and launch readiness, positioning the company to compete globally.

The company’s growth has been supported by transformative space policy reforms introduced since 2023, which opened the sector to private innovation, collaboration, and foreign investment. Skyroot has raised over $95 million to date and recently partnered with Axiom Space, strengthening India’s integration into the global LEO (Low Earth Orbit) ecosystem.

As the facility becomes operational, India is poised to enter a new era of commercial space capability—driven by innovation, speed, and world-class private-sector engineering. Skyroot’s achievements symbolize a new chapter in the nation’s space journey, with Hyderabad emerging as a powerful launchpad for India’s next generation of space leaders.
