In a historic leap for underwater exploration, UK-based company DEEP has unveiled the world’s first permanent steel underwater home, built 50 meters (164 feet) below the ocean surface. Named “Vanguard,” this groundbreaking habitat is designed to allow human beings — specifically scientists known as aquanauts — to live and work underwater for weeks at a time.
Vanguard is a fully equipped underwater residence, offering all the comforts of a modern home despite being deep beneath the waves. The structure includes bedrooms, a living area, kitchen, bathroom, and even a dive center. A specialized diving pod allows aquanauts to explore and conduct research at greater depths without returning to the surface frequently.
DEEP’s mission goes far beyond a single structure. The company aims to evolve humans into “underwater-living beings,” enabling long-term habitation beneath the oceans to unlock new scientific discoveries about marine life, ecosystems, and climate change.
In addition to Vanguard, DEEP is also developing “Sentinel,” a luxurious underwater hotel planned at a depth of 200 meters. Once completed, it will allow visitors to experience underwater vacations in a way never seen before.
With this bold innovation, DEEP has opened the door to a future where humans may not just explore the ocean — but truly live in it.
