Limerick Scientists Set World Record with World’s First Full-Cell Dual-Cation Battery

Scientists at the University of Limerick have made history by developing the world’s first full-cell dual-cation battery, a breakthrough that has officially earned a Guinness World Record.

The pioneering battery technology utilizes two different cations (positively charged ions) to enhance both energy density and charging speed — a feat never before achieved in a single full-cell system. Researchers say the innovation could revolutionize energy storage for electric vehicles, renewable energy grids, and portable electronics.

The record-setting prototype was unveiled at a special event in Limerick, where the Guinness World Records team confirmed it as the first operational full-cell dual-cation battery in the world.

Dr. Fiona McCarthy, lead researcher of the project, said, “This achievement puts Ireland at the forefront of next-generation battery research. Our team’s work opens new pathways for safer, more efficient, and longer-lasting energy solutions.”

The University of Limerick’s Energy Materials Laboratory collaborated with several international partners on the project, marking a major step toward sustainable energy innovation.
