The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati has brought immense pride to India by securing a prestigious international architectural award for its stunning new terminal building. The achievement places the airport on the world map of innovative and culturally resonant infrastructure.
The new Terminal 2 (T2) clinched the International Architecture Award 2025 in the highly competitive Airports and Transportation Centers category. The award is presented by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The award-winning design, helmed by the architectural firm NUDES, is more than just a functional space; it is a profound architectural narrative celebrating the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of Assam and the Northeast.
The Foxtail Orchid: The state flower of Assam, symbolizing grace and elegance, is a primary design motif.
Bamboo: Known for its resilience and sustainability, bamboo is integrated into the structure, aligning with the project’s eco-friendly goals.
The Brahmaputra River: The fluid lines and organic flow of the river are echoed in the terminal’s architecture.
Local Handicrafts: Traditional elements, such as the Jaapi (traditional conical hat) and Gamocha patterns, are subtly woven into the interiors and wall motifs, giving passengers an immediate cultural immersion.
The design was also lauded for its focus on sustainability and enhanced passenger experience. The new 140,000 square meter terminal features:
Eco-Friendly Features: Integration of a green roof, rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient lighting, and extensive use of natural light through large skylights.
Indoor Greenery: The inclusion of vertical green walls and an “arrival forest” that greets passengers, improves air quality and provides a serene transition from the runway.
Modern Efficiency: The terminal is designed to accommodate over 13 million passengers annually, a six-fold increase, equipped with advanced systems for efficient passenger flow and baggage handling.
🇮🇳 Gateway to the Northeast
This global recognition for LGBI Airport is a testament to India’s growing excellence in architecture that successfully blends modern, world-class infrastructure with deep cultural roots.
The honor significantly boosts Assam’s image, cementing Guwahati’s position as the true Gateway to Northeast India and promoting tourism, trade, and international connectivity for the entire region. The new terminal, managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, is expected to become operational later this year, ushering in a new era for travel in the Northeast.
