In a shining example of youth innovation and sustainability, Pritesh Mistry, a 21-year-old biotech engineering student, has transformed his eco-conscious idea into a thriving business — Bioleather, a Mumbai-based startup producing plant-based alternatives to animal leather.
Founded in 2019, Bioleather uses natural materials such as tomatoes, apples, and organic waste to create durable, high-quality leather that looks and feels like the real thing — but without harming animals or the planet. The startup provides a cruelty-free and sustainable option for industries seeking to reduce their carbon footprint and environmental impact.
With an investment of ₹30–35 lakhs, Mistry turned his vision into reality. For FY2024–25, Bioleather reported an annual turnover of ₹1.2 crore, with profits of 15–20%. The company currently employs 13 people and produces around 5,000 meters of leather per month, catering to global demand in the fashion, footwear, bags, and automotive industries.
In 2021, Bioleather received the PETA Vegan Fashion Award for Best Innovation in Textiles, recognizing its pioneering work in ethical fashion and sustainable materials.
“Bioleather is committed to creating new sustainable solutions and promoting ethical practices through the industry value chains to help build a better world,” said Mistry, speaking to Startup Pedia.
As the startup prepares to enter the direct-to-consumer (D2C) market, Bioleather continues to prove that innovation, compassion, and business can coexist, showing how Indian entrepreneurship can lead the global shift toward sustainability.
