The Youth Asian Games witnessed an extraordinary performance by 16-year-old Indian weightlifter Priteesmita Bhoi, who clinched gold in the girls’ 44kg category and simultaneously shattered the world youth record in the clean and jerk.
Priteesmita successfully heaved 92kg in the clean and jerk for the new record. Combined with her 66kg lift in the snatch, her total stood at an impressive 158kg. The young athlete showed remarkable composure, steadily increasing her clean and jerk lift from 87kg to the record-breaking 92kg. China’s Wu Jihong (aggregate156kg) and Vietnam’s Dao Thi Yen (aggregate 141kg finished second and third, respectively.
The weightlifting arena continued to bring glory, with 17-year-old Maharajan Arumugapandian securing a silver medal in the boys’ 60kg category. Maharajan posted an accumulated weight of 256kg (114kg snatch,142kg clean and jerk), finishing just behind China’s Chen Xunfa 261kg.
In the swimming pool, the girls’ quartet of Edwina Jason, Tannu, Avinash Shourya, and Bhumika Nehate swam their way to a silver medal in the medley relay, clocking 2:09.65 seconds. The boys’ medley relay team finished fifth.
With these stellar performances on Sunday, India’s total medals tally has climbed to 23! This includes:
- 3 Gold
- 9 Silver
- 11 Bronze
This substantial increase builds on the 17 medals (2 Gold, 6 Silver, 9 Bronze) won up to Saturday.
Close Misses in Other Events:
In cycling, Anjali Jakhar narrowly missed a podium finish, taking fourth place in the Girls’ Individual Time Trial with a time of 17:43.89 seconds.
In the girls’ javelin throw, Siya Banjara and Misti Karmakar finished seventh and eighth respectively.
