Maruti Suzuki Delivers First-Ever Rail Shipment of Cars to Kashmir, Revolutionizing Auto Logistics

In a historic milestone for Indian logistics and the Kashmir Valley’s economy, Maruti Suzuki India Limited has become the first automobile manufacturer to successfully transport vehicles to the region via the Indian Railways.

A dedicated freight train, carrying over 100 new vehicles, including popular models like the Brezza, Dzire, WagonR, and S-Presso, arrived at the newly opened Anantnag railway terminal on Friday. The consignment originated from Maruti Suzuki’s in-plant railway siding at its Manesar facility in Haryana, traversing a route of over 850 kilometers.

The landmark journey was made possible by the recently commissioned Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which includes the engineering marvel, the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed the development, stating, “The Jammu–Srinagar railway line is a game changer for the people of Jammu & Kashmir. After apples, Maruti Suzuki cars will now be transported efficiently by rail, transforming logistics and lives.”

This shift to rail transport is expected to dramatically improve supply chain efficiency and enhance the customer experience in the Valley:

  • Pristine Condition: Vehicles will no longer need to be driven up the treacherous 300-km Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, which is prone to closures from landslides and snow. This ensures customers receive their cars in factory-fresh condition, free from the wear and tear of a long road journey.
  • Reduced Delays: The new rail link bypasses the frequent disruptions on the highway, ensuring faster and more predictable deliveries, especially during the challenging winter months.
  • Green Logistics: Maruti Suzuki, which operates in-plant rail sidings aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, strengthens its commitment to sustainable logistics by choosing rail over road for long-distance transport.

Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, remarked, “Railway dispatches are central to our logistics strategy. The Chenab arch bridge is a landmark, enabling seamless and efficient connectivity to the Kashmir Valley and allowing us to better serve customers in the region.”

The achievement sets a powerful precedent for other automakers and freight operators, opening a new era of connectivity and economic development for the region.
