India Opens Its Largest Railway Station Near Amaravati, Built to Handle 3 Lakh Passengers Daily

In a massive infrastructural push for the state’s capital region, Indian Railways and the Andhra Pradesh government are moving ahead with plans to build one of India’s largest and most ambitious railway stations near Amaravati.

The proposed station is set to feature 24 platforms—a capacity that would surpass the current largest, Howrah Junction (23 platforms)—and is being designed to handle a staggering 300,000 (3 lakh) passengers daily, a footprint that firmly establishes it as a major national rail hub.

  • Platform Record: With a proposed 24 platforms, the new Amaravati station is poised to claim the title of the largest railway station in India by platform count.
  • Passenger Capacity: The facility is being planned to cater to an estimated daily footfall of 3 lakh passengers, underscoring its role as a key transport gateway for the capital and South India.
  • Scale of Development: The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) has reportedly earmarked 1,500 acres for the entire railway junction and its surrounding infrastructure, indicating a comprehensive “rail-city” development plan.
  • Connectivity: The project is part of the newly approved 57-km Errupalem–Amaravati–Namburu railway line (sanctioned at over ₹2,245 crore), which will link the capital with major national trunk routes, providing direct rail access to cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, and Delhi. The new line also includes the construction of a major bridge across the Krishna River.

While initial work is focused on the construction of the new railway line, the state government has urged the Ministry of Railways to develop the Amaravati station as a Model Railway Station. The new facility is expected to incorporate state-of-the-art amenities, modern terminals, and advanced systems to provide a world-class travel experience.

The massive project, central to Andhra Pradesh’s long-term infrastructure strategy, is seen as a crucial step in boosting the region’s economic growth and cementing Amaravati’s position as a major urban and commercial center in the country.
