Mumbai’s commuting landscape has been revolutionized with the grand, full-scale debut of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), the city’s first and only completely underground metro corridor. Following the inauguration of its final phase, the 33.5-kilometre line recorded a massive footfall, ferrying over 1.5 lakh (150,000) passengers on its first full day of operations.
The line, which connects the far north suburb of Aarey to the extreme south at Cuffe Parade, saw a strong demand, particularly for travel to the city’s major commercial and government districts. This ridership figure is a significant leap from the average of 60,000 commuters recorded when only the partial route was operational.
Revenue and Economic Impact:
The full route, with fares ranging from ₹10 to ₹70, is projected to generate substantial daily earnings, reflecting its immediate success in attracting a large volume of commuters. The robust ridership on Day 1 solidifies the Aqua Line’s role as a major new artery, with officials and transport experts anticipating it will relieve up to 15% of the passenger load on the city’s notoriously overcrowded suburban railway network.
The ₹37,270 crore project, nine years in the making, has been hailed as a “game-changer” for Mumbaikars, promising to cut the travel time from Aarey to Cuffe Parade to less than an hour, a journey that previously took over 90 minutes by road.
