Legendary Performer and 261 Fans Break World Record on ‘Monkey Mountain’

The iconic hero of Chinese mythology, the Monkey King (Sun Wukong), was brought to spectacular life in a massive gathering that set a new world record. Zhang Jinlai, 66, better known by his stage name Liu Xiao Ling Tong, led 261 fans—all dressed as the mythical hero—in a synchronized demonstration on China’s “Monkey Mountain.”

The event took place at the Wulongkou Scenic Area in Jiyuan, Henan province, an area famed for its natural habitat of over 3,000 macaques. Liu Xiao Ling Tong is universally recognized as the definitive performer of the Monkey King, a role he immortalized in the seminal 1986 TV series Journey to the West.

Clad in his classic, vibrant costume, the legendary actor stood alongside his impressive entourage. Each participant wielded the golden-hooped rod—Sun Wukong’s magical weapon—while standing in neat formation against the backdrop of the scenic area.

Amid waving flags, the crowd of costumed fans performed the Monkey King’s signature gestures, creating a majestic and unified spectacle. The demonstration successfully secured a new world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as the Monkey King.

The actor, who has dedicated his life to the character, continues to embrace the role, hoping to keep the spirit and legacy of the beloved mythological figure alive for new generations.
