Chinese Artist Pei Haozheng Sets Third World Record with Longest Paper Strip

A Chinese artist with a penchant for pushing the boundaries of paper has once again earned a place in the record books. Pei Haozheng, a master of paper cutting and origami, has officially set a new Guinness World Records title for the “longest strip cut from one sheet of paper,” with an astonishing length of 108.15 meters (354 ft 9 in)—nearly the length of an American football field.

The record-breaking feat, which took place in Beijing on May 4, 2024, was the culmination of a year-long project for the artist, who also goes by the name “Hotz Pei.” He used a single A4-sized silver foil paper and a pair of medical scissors to meticulously create the continuous strip, which measured just half a millimeter in width. The previous record, a mere 2.75 meters, was easily surpassed in a show of incredible precision and patience.

Following the successful record attempt, Pei transformed the chaotic tangle of paper into a stunning piece of art titled, “Between Chaos and Order.” The final sculpture, shaped like a cerebral nerve slice, is a testament to the interplay between art and science. Pei explained that the work explores the idea that natural systems, much like the human brain, exist in a complex space between perfect order and complete randomness.

This is not the first time Pei has impressed the world with his paper-based skills. His latest achievement marks his third Guinness World Records title. In 2022, he set a record for the most origami flowers made from a single sheet of paper by folding 100 roses onto a deer sculpture. In 2023, he followed up with the largest origami snail, a massive 4.1-meter-long creation folded from a single sheet of gold foil paper.

Pei says he hopes his records will inspire others to explore their passions and to see the limitless potential in even the simplest of materials.
