A pair of London-based social media foodies have cooked up a new Guinness World Record, creating the largest scotch egg the world has ever seen. On June 17, Phoenix Ross and Oli Paterson teamed up to produce a monster snack weighing in at a scale-tipping 7.81 kg (17 lb 3.48 oz), a feat that is officially heavier than a bowling ball.
The colossal creation smashed the previous record of 6.2 kg (13 lb 10 oz), a title that had stood for nearly 20 years. For their record-breaking attempt, Ross and Paterson, known for their elaborate food content, had to source an ostrich egg, which was the only egg large enough to form the centerpiece of the snack. They encased the hard-boiled ostrich egg in a whopping 22 lbs of sausage meat, which was then coated in panko breadcrumbs.
The culinary challenge was immense. After a failed first attempt a week prior, the duo succeeded on their second try by carefully deep-frying the gargantuan egg for 30 minutes before baking it for an additional two hours to ensure the meat was fully cooked. A Guinness World Records adjudicator was on hand to verify the weight and confirm that the yolk remained perfectly intact when the egg was cut open with a sword.
“It’s always been a lifelong dream of mine to get a Guinness World Record,” said Oli Paterson. “We’re so proud.”
To honor the Guinness World Records rule that no food must go to waste, the chefs decided to turn their 24,000-calorie creation into 19 burritos, which they froze for later. The ambitious project showcases the duo’s creativity and determination, proving that a little ingenuity can turn a beloved classic into a world-class, record-breaking masterpiece.
