For over two decades, Hugo Tsang Cheuk-ti has been a dedicated Pokémon fan, and his passion has now been officially validated in a record-breaking way. The 32-year-old Hong Kong office worker has earned the Guinness World Records title for the largest collection of Gengar memorabilia, amassing an incredible 1,200 unique items.
The record was certified on September 22, 2024, after Tsang completed a painstaking catalog of his collection. His dedication to the ghost-type Pokémon began at age eight, with a single translucent purple toy given to him by his mother. That early memory sparked a lifelong obsession with the character he found both powerful and mischievous.
Over the past 22 years, Tsang has built an astonishing collection that includes everything from plush toys, cards, and accessories to Gengar-themed tableware and stationery. He has meticulously sourced items from around the world, often with the help of friends who would search for rare or region-specific items for him.
“I didn’t go for the record to be famous,” Tsang said in an interview with Guinness World Records. “I just want people to think of me when they see Gengar. Where I am, Gengar’s there too.”
The record is not just a testament to his collecting prowess but also to the enduring power of childhood hobbies. Tsang’s impressive hoard of Gengar treasures stands as a symbol of how a simple toy can evolve into a lifelong passion, a world record, and a source of joy for a devoted fan.
