Indian Artist Creates World’s Largest Pin and Thread Art Honoring Mahatma Gandhi

In a powerful and painstaking tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, Indian artist Sreekanth Sukumaran has set a new Guinness World Record by creating the largest pin and thread art in the world. The massive artwork, depicting the revered Father of the Nation, measures a staggering 23.67 m² (254 ft²).

Sukumaran, a skilled artist from Kerala, undertook the monumental task in November 2024. The creation took nine continuous hours of work, with a crowd of onlookers mesmerized as the intricate portrait of Gandhi came to life. The process involved meticulously wrapping a single, continuous thread around thousands of pins to form the image. The stunning result is a testament to the artist’s patience, precision, and passion.

The record-breaking size of the artwork is equivalent to about one-and-a-half standard parking spaces, an impressive scale that required immense focus and dedication. The choice of Gandhi as the subject holds deep cultural significance, as he remains a foundational figure in the narrative of modern India.

While the exact number of pins and the total length of the thread used were not specified, the sheer scale of the project is a testament to the new benchmarks being set by artists in India. The achievement not only honors Gandhi’s legacy but also places a spotlight on the unique and innovative forms of art emerging from the country.
