Assam’s cultural richness and natural splendor have taken center stage on the global architecture map. The newly constructed terminal of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati has been honoured with the International Architectural Excellence Award 2025, recognizing its innovative and sustainable design that beautifully weaves tradition with modernity.

Designed by a team of leading Indian architects, the terminal draws inspiration from Assam’s ecological and cultural heritage. The bamboo-inspired structure incorporates orchid-shaped roofing, gamocha (traditional handwoven cloth) patterns on facades, and a central Sky Forest — a vertical garden that mimics the region’s dense greenery and biodiversity.

The terminal, which opened earlier this year, also features:

  • Locally sourced bamboo and wood, promoting sustainable building practices.
  • Energy-efficient systems and a rainwater harvesting setup, making it one of India’s greenest airports.
  • Art installations by Assamese artisans, showcasing weaving, pottery, and classical dance forms.

The jury lauded the terminal for “bridging cultural symbolism with futuristic functionality” and for creating “a passenger experience that is not just about travel, but storytelling.”

With this international recognition, Guwahati Airport joins the ranks of the world’s most iconic airport terminals — while proudly wearing its Assamese identity on its sleeve.
