In a historic and emotionally charged moment for Indian wrestling, 16-year-old Hardeep Singh has become India’s first-ever U-17 Greco-Roman World Wrestling Champion. The victory not only marks a sporting milestone but also tells the tale of an extraordinary journey of grit, loss, and triumph.
Hailing from a small village in Punjab, Hardeep lost both his parents at the tender age of 8. Raised by his grandfather, he turned to wrestling for solace and strength. With sheer determination and the support of his local akhada, he rose through district and national levels before finally making it to the international stage.
In the final of the U-17 World Wrestling Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey, Hardeep delivered a flawless performance in the 60 kg Greco-Roman category, defeating his Russian opponent with a dominant 6-1 score. His aggressive defense and swift tactical moves left spectators and coaches in awe.
“This is not just my medal. This is for every child who has ever felt alone and still dared to dream,” an emotional Hardeep said after his win, dedicating his gold to his late parents and grandfather.
With this victory, India has entered a new era in Greco-Roman wrestling—a discipline in which the country has traditionally struggled to shine on the world stage. Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials lauded Hardeep’s achievement, calling him “a future Olympic hope.”
Social media has erupted in praise for the young champion, with #HardeepSingh and #WrestlingGold trending nationwide.
