Hyderabad’s Trailblazing Transgender Clinic Reopens as ‘Sabrang’ with New Vision

In a powerful step toward inclusive healthcare, India’s first transgender-led clinic has reopened in Hyderabad under the new name Sabrang Clinic, with renewed support and funding from Tata Trusts. Formerly known as Mitr Clinic, the facility now stands as a beacon of dignity, representation, and specialized care for the transgender and LGBTQIA+ community.

Sabrang Clinic is entirely run by transgender professionals, offering a safe, stigma-free space for individuals seeking physical and mental healthcare, gender-affirming services, HIV treatment, and counseling.

“This is not just a clinic — it’s a symbol of visibility, empowerment, and self-determination,” said Dr. Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju, a transgender doctor and advocate.

Backed by Tata Trusts, the revamped Sabrang Clinic is equipped with upgraded medical infrastructure, a broader range of services, and outreach programs aimed at underserved trans communities in Telangana and beyond.

  • General health check-ups
  • Hormone therapy and gender-affirming care
  • STI and HIV treatment and prevention
  • Mental health counseling
  • Legal and social support services

Established in 2017 as Mitr Clinic, it had gained national recognition for being the first of its kind in South Asia, run for the community, by the community. Its reopening as Sabrang marks a renewed commitment to trans-inclusive healthcare, with sustainability and scalability in focus.

“Sabrang means ‘many colors’ — a fitting name for a space that embraces every identity,” said clinic coordinator Salma, a transgender health worker and activist.

Activists have praised the initiative as a model for gender-affirming public health, urging other states to replicate the effort to ensure equitable access for all gender identities.

As India moves toward a more inclusive healthcare system, Sabrang Clinic stands as a landmark of hope, healing, and human rights.
