Shri Gopinath Swain from Odisha Conferred Padma Shri for Lifelong Contribution to Folk Art

The Government of India has honoured Shri Gopinath Swain from Odisha with the prestigious Padma Shri award in the field of Art, recognizing his outstanding dedication to preserving and promoting the traditional folk art and cultural expressions of the region.

A celebrated figure in the world of Odissi folk performance and storytelling traditions, Shri Swain is widely known for his mastery in Pala and Daskathia — traditional narrative art forms that combine music, poetry, mythological tales, and moral lessons. For decades, he has been instrumental in taking these vanishing art forms from rural courtyards to national stages, breathing new life into Odisha’s rich cultural tapestry.

With deep lyrical command, a resonant voice, and impeccable rhythm, Shri Swain has enthralled audiences across India. His performances are not just acts of entertainment but cultural preservation, often emphasizing spiritual wisdom, ethical living, and social harmony.

Apart from performing, Shri Swain has worked tirelessly to mentor young artists, conduct workshops in schools, and document lesser-known stories and chants from Odisha’s oral traditions.

“I never imagined this recognition,” he said humbly upon receiving the honour. “My mission has always been to keep our stories alive — for our children, our villages, and our future.”

Artists and cultural organisations across Odisha have praised the award, calling it a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to traditional arts and community enrichment.

By conferring the Padma Shri on Shri Gopinath Swain, the nation salutes a true cultural ambassador whose voice has kept centuries-old traditions vibrant in a changing world.
