In recognition of their exceptional contribution to India’s rich folk traditions, the Government of India has jointly conferred the Padma Shri on Ms. Shanti Devi Paswan and Shri Shivan Paswan from Bihar in the field of Art.
This remarkable duo has dedicated their lives to the preservation and promotion of Dalit folk art and traditional performance forms, especially those rooted in the Bhojpuri cultural heritage. Through their vibrant storytelling, folk theatre, and musical expressions, they have brought the voices of marginalized communities to national attention.
Hailing from humble backgrounds, Ms. Shanti Devi and Shri Shivan Paswan have been performing together for decades, reviving age-old art forms such as Naach, Bhikhari Thakur-style theatre, and folk ballads that reflect the lived experiences, struggles, and aspirations of rural Bihar.
Their performances have not only entertained but educated audiences on themes of social justice, equality, and cultural pride. Their work has inspired younger generations to reconnect with their roots and take pride in local traditions.
Reacting to the honour, the duo said, “This Padma Shri is a recognition of every folk artist who carries the soul of the soil through song and story.”
Cultural organizations and art lovers across Bihar and beyond have welcomed the award, describing the Paswans as “guardians of folk wisdom and champions of cultural dignity.”
The conferment of the Padma Shri on Ms. Shanti Devi Paswan and Shri Shivan Paswan is a tribute to the enduring power of folk art to unite, inspire, and give voice to the voiceless.
