Abu Dhabi Launches World’s First Crypto-Powered Taxi Payments System

In a global first, Abu Dhabi has officially launched a crypto payments system for taxis, allowing residents and tourists to pay for rides using digital currencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT.

The innovative system, unveiled by the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in collaboration with major blockchain partners, marks a significant step in the emirate’s push toward becoming a smart, cashless city and a leader in blockchain integration for everyday services.

  • Pay via mobile apps or QR codes in taxis using selected cryptocurrencies
  • View real-time conversion rates to dirhams
  • Complete transactions securely through blockchain-enabled wallets

The crypto payment option is now live across hundreds of taxis in Abu Dhabi, with plans to expand across the UAE by 2026.

“We are proud to be the first city in the world to offer crypto payments in public transportation,” said a senior official at ITC. “This is in line with Abu Dhabi’s vision of innovation and technological excellence.”

The pilot was reportedly successful during testing phases earlier this year, with high adoption from tech-savvy users and international travelers.

  • Positions Abu Dhabi as a global blockchain pioneer
  • Enhances tourist convenience and financial flexibility
  • Reflects growing trust in crypto as a legitimate payment method

Abu Dhabi has been at the forefront of smart infrastructure, launching AI-based traffic management, facial-recognition metro security, and now, blockchain-powered public services.

With this move, Abu Dhabi not only leads the Middle East’s digital transformation but also sets a new global standard for how cities can integrate decentralized finance into everyday life — one taxi ride at a time.
