Celebrated artist Shri Dasari Kondappa from Telangana has been conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award for his outstanding contribution to the field of Art, particularly in preserving and promoting traditional folk and tribal painting forms.
Known for his mastery of Chindu Yakshaganam, a vibrant theatrical folk art native to Telangana, Kondappa has dedicated over four decades to reviving and sustaining this rich cultural legacy. Through his performances, workshops, and community outreach, he has not only kept the art form alive but also passed it on to younger generations.
Born into a family of traditional performers, Dasari Kondappa began learning the nuances of Chindu Yakshaganam at an early age. His interpretations of mythological tales and social themes using rhythmic movements, expressive dialogues, and colorful attire have captivated audiences across India.
Over the years, Kondappa has trained hundreds of rural youth, organized folk theatre festivals, and collaborated with cultural institutions to document and archive Telangana’s artistic heritage.
