In a landmark recognition of her excellence in sports, ace squash player Ms. Joshna Chinappa from Tamil Nadu has been awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours. The award celebrates her trailblazing achievements, longevity in the sport, and immense contribution to Indian squash over two decades.
Joshna, widely regarded as a pioneer of Indian women’s squash, made history in 2014 by winning India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in squash (women’s doubles) alongside Dipika Pallikal. She has represented India at numerous international events, including the Asian Games, World Team Championships, and British Open, securing several medals and accolades throughout her career.
With 18 National Championship titles to her name and a career-high world ranking of World No. 10 in 2016, Joshna has inspired a generation of young athletes in a sport that has long struggled for mainstream attention in India. She was earlier honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2013.
Reacting to her Padma Shri win, Chinappa said, “It’s an incredible honour to be recognised with the Padma Shri. This award is not just for me but for every squash player and coach who believed in the sport’s future in India. I’m proud to have played a role in that journey.”
Even after undergoing knee surgery in 2023, Joshna made a strong comeback, proving her grit and dedication by winning titles and mentoring younger players. Her continued commitment to the game as a competitor and ambassador reflects her enduring legacy.
With squash making its Olympic debut in 2028, Joshna Chinappa’s recognition with the Padma Shri comes at a fitting time—highlighting her as both a champion athlete and a visionary for Indian squash.
