In a historic recognition of grassroots agricultural innovation, Ms. K Chellammal, affectionately known as “Nariyal Amma”, has been conferred with the Padma Shri for her exceptional contributions to sustainable agriculture in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
A pioneering organic farmer from Rangachang village in South Andaman, Ms. Chellammal has revolutionized coconut farming by adopting eco-friendly practices that enrich the soil, conserve water, and protect the island’s fragile environment. Using mulching techniques with coconut leaves, natural pest management with trap plants, and intercropping with banana, yam, pineapple, vegetables, and flowers, she has created a resilient and biodiverse model farm.
Her innovative methods have been adopted by over 150 farmers in the region, many of whom were trained and mentored by her. Her leadership has helped foster a community of farmers dedicated to organic cultivation and environmental conservation.
Speaking after receiving the honor, Ms. Chellammal said: “I never expected a national award for just doing what I love—farming. This is not just my award, but one for every farmer in the islands striving to protect our soil and traditions.”
In addition to her farming innovations, Ms. Chellammal is also promoting agro-tourism and beekeeping, inviting students and tourists to experience sustainable farming firsthand.
Her recognition with the Padma Shri shines a national spotlight on the power of local wisdom, environmental stewardship, and the vital role of women farmers in India’s agricultural progress.
