Celebrated Bangladeshi singer and cultural icon Ms. Rezwana Choudhury Bannya has been conferred the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in the field of Art, for her extraordinary contribution to music and promotion of Rabindra Sangeet globally.
One of the most revered exponents of Rabindra Sangeet (songs written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore), Ms. Bannya has played a pivotal role in popularizing this timeless genre not only in Bangladesh and India but across the world. Her emotive voice, classical grounding, and deep philosophical interpretation of Tagore’s works have earned her acclaim from critics and audiences alike.
As a professor, performer, and founder of Shurer Dhara, a renowned music academy in Dhaka, Ms. Bannya has nurtured generations of students in the philosophy and melodies of Tagore. Her work has served as a cultural bridge between India and Bangladesh, strengthening ties through shared literary and artistic heritage.
India’s recognition of Ms. Bannya with the Padma Shri underlines the country’s commitment to honouring voices that preserve and propagate South Asia’s cultural unity and artistic richness.
