The Government of India has posthumously conferred the Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third-highest civilian award, on veteran actor and politician Shri Vijayakanth for his remarkable contribution to Indian cinema and public service, especially in the state of Tamil Nadu.
Fondly known as “Captain” by fans and followers, Vijayakanth starred in over 150 Tamil films spanning a career of more than three decades. From powerful action heroes to roles promoting social justice and national integrity, his characters often mirrored the values he stood for in real life.
He was celebrated not only for his on-screen charisma and dialogue delivery, but also for selecting films that reflected patriotism, social issues, and empowerment of the common man. Hits like Captain Prabhakaran, Chinna Gounder, and Ramana remain etched in Tamil cinema history.
In 2005, Vijayakanth founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and emerged as a key figure in Tamil Nadu politics, advocating for clean governance and regional development. He served as Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and left a lasting impact on his supporters through his sincerity and commitment to public causes.
By honouring Shri Vijayakanth with the Padma Bhushan (Posthumous), the nation recognizes his dual legacy as a cinematic icon and a dedicated public servant who remained rooted in the cultural and social fabric of Tamil Nadu.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to his memory, with the PM stating:
“Vijayakanth was a beloved actor and a committed leader. His contributions to cinema and society will continue to inspire generations.”
