Dr. Ashwin B. Mehta Awarded Padma Bhushan for Pioneering Contributions to Cardiology in India

Renowned cardiologist Dr. Ashwin Balachand Mehta has been conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for his outstanding contributions to the field of Medicine, particularly in interventional cardiology. A celebrated figure in Indian medical circles, Dr. Mehta has spent more than five decades advancing cardiac care in the country.

Based in Maharashtra, Dr. Mehta is credited with being one of the earliest practitioners of interventional cardiology in India. He performed some of the country’s first angioplasties and has played a crucial role in establishing modern cardiac catheterization laboratories and heart care systems across major Indian hospitals.

His groundbreaking work has helped standardize advanced cardiac procedures and bring them within reach of the average Indian patient.

Dr. Mehta has not only treated thousands of patients but also mentored generations of cardiologists, contributed to policy-making in cardiac health, and published extensively in national and international journals. He has held leadership roles in prestigious organizations such as the Cardiological Society of India (CSI) and the Indian College of Cardiology.
