Smt. Sally Holkar Awarded Padma Shri for Reviving India’s Handloom Heritage

Celebrated textile revivalist and entrepreneur Smt. Sally Holkar has been conferred with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, for her exceptional contribution to Trade and Industry, particularly in revitalizing India’s handloom sector and empowering rural weavers.

Co-founder of the WomenWeave Charitable Trust, Smt. Holkar has played a pivotal role in transforming the lives of hundreds of women artisans across India, especially in Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh—known for its exquisite handloom sarees.

Smt. Holkar, who married into the royal Holkar family of Indore, left behind a privileged life to work at the grassroots with traditional weavers. Recognizing the decline in India’s handloom sector, she committed herself to preserving indigenous weaving traditions while creating sustainable livelihoods for women.

Through WomenWeave, she helped establish weaving training centers, created markets for handmade products, and introduced design innovation that honored tradition without sacrificing utility.

“When a woman learns to weave, she weaves independence into her life,” she once said, summing up her vision.

Under her leadership, Maheshwari textiles have gained international recognition, while the initiative has expanded to support eco-friendly fibers, fair trade practices, and skill-based employment for women from underserved backgrounds.

Her efforts have bridged the gap between heritage and modern design, ensuring that Indian handlooms remain relevant, respected, and economically viable.

In an age of fast fashion, Smt. Sally Holkar’s work shines as a beacon of ethical entrepreneurship. The Padma Shri honors not only her role in reviving a dying art but also her vision of trade as a tool for empowerment, dignity, and preservation of India’s textile heritage.
