The Government of India has honoured Shri Narayan, affectionately known as Bhulai Bhai, with the Padma Shri 2025 (Posthumous) in the field of Public Affairs, recognizing his life-long commitment to integrity, public service, and principled politics in Uttar Pradesh.
Born in Pagarchhapra village in the early 20th century, Bhulai Bhai served as a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Naurangiya constituency. As a leader associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he embodied the values of discipline, honesty, and austerity.
Even in his later years, Bhulai Bhai remained a vocal presence in the political landscape. Known for wearing a simple saffron gamcha and walking barefoot, he became a symbol of humility and ethical public life.
In a widely cited incident from the 1970s, Bhulai Bhai reportedly rejected a suitcase full of money offered to him during an election campaign. Instead of keeping the bribe, he returned it and made the act public—demonstrating moral courage at a time when such actions were rare in politics.
Bhulai Bhai passed away on October 31, 2024, at the age of 110. His passing drew condolences from across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who praised his dedication to the nation and unshakable values.
- Moral Leadership: A rare symbol of incorruptible politics in modern India.
- Lifelong Service: Spanning multiple decades of electoral and social engagement.
- Grassroots Inspiration: An ideal public servant who led by example.
The Padma Shri awarded to Shri Narayan ‘Bhulai Bhai’ serves as a powerful reminder that public life can still be rooted in honesty, humility, and selfless service. His story continues to inspire new generations of political leaders and citizens alike.
