Distinguished nephrologist Dr. Hemant Kumar has been awarded the Padma Shri 2025 in the field of Medicine for his lifelong commitment to kidney health and affordable treatment in Bihar. The award recognizes his selfless service spanning over three decades, during which he has transformed the landscape of nephrology in the region.
Dr. Kumar, known for his humility and tireless dedication, has worked extensively at renowned institutions like the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, and has played a pivotal role in setting up low-cost dialysis centres aimed at making life-saving treatments accessible to the underprivileged.
“I have done my work selflessly, not for awards,” said Dr. Kumar. “My mission has always been to prevent kidney disease and reach people who need help the most.”
Beyond clinical excellence, Dr. Hemant Kumar is also known for his community outreach efforts. Through health camps and educational programs, he has spread awareness about kidney disease prevention and early detection—key to improving health outcomes in underserved areas.
In January 2025, he was also felicitated by Akshat Seva Sadan in Patna for his humanitarian service, further reflecting his impact beyond the hospital walls.
