Padma Shri Honour for Madhya Pradesh’s Art Visionary Shri Harchandan Singh Bhatti

Renowned art designer and cultural curator Shri Harchandan Singh Bhatti has been awarded the Padma Shri 2025 for his exceptional contributions to Art, particularly for his visionary work in preserving and promoting tribal and folk art traditions in Madhya Pradesh.

Shri Bhatti pursued fine arts at the Government Institute of Fine Arts in Indore. His artistic journey found its true expression when he joined Bharat Bhavan, the iconic multi-arts complex in Bhopal, in 1981. Over the course of four decades, he rose to become Director of the Roopankar Museum of Fine Arts, retiring in 2021.

Shri Bhatti’s legacy includes the design and development of multiple cultural landmarks:

  • He was a lead designer for the Tribal Museum in Bhopal, often hailed as one of India’s most immersive tributes to indigenous culture.
  • He played a key role in the creation of the Adivasi Museum in Khajuraho, including its modernization in 2022–23.
  • His artistic vision also shaped the Triveni Museum in Ujjain, blending heritage architecture with innovative exhibition design.
  • Currently, he contributes to the Mahakal Lok complex in Ujjain, crafting symbolic metal sculptures that honor ancient Indian traditions.

Known for integrating traditional aesthetics with modern design sensibilities, Bhatti has consistently elevated indigenous stories through visual language and museum experiences.

On receiving the Padma Shri, Shri Bhatti shared, “It is the proudest achievement of my life. I am deeply grateful to the government and to my mentors who shaped my journey in art and culture.” His words reflect a lifetime of humility, dedication, and creative excellence.

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav congratulated Shri Bhatti, stating, “Madhya Pradesh is proud of his achievements. His work has brought national recognition to our state’s rich cultural heritage.”
