Celebrated historian and academician Prof. David R. Syiemlieh has been honoured with the Padma Shri 2025 for his outstanding contributions to Literature and Education. A native of Meghalaya, Prof. Syiemlieh is widely regarded as one of the foremost scholars of North East India’s history and culture.
Over the course of a distinguished academic career, Prof. Syiemlieh has served in key roles at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), including as Head of the Department of History, Registrar, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor. His influence extended nationally when he became Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh, and later served as a Member and Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
A prolific author and editor, Prof. Syiemlieh has penned several books on colonial administration and indigenous resistance in North East India. His works, such as British Administration in Meghalaya and Layers of History, have contributed significantly to understanding the region’s unique socio-political context. Notably, his research corrected the historical record on Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing’s death, prompting the government to officially recognize the date.
In addition to his academic work, Prof. Syiemlieh has been a Fulbright Scholar, a Charles Wallace Fellow, and a member of multiple national and international historical associations. His contributions have brought the rich heritage of Meghalaya and the broader North East into mainstream Indian scholarship.
The announcement of the Padma Shri was met with widespread appreciation. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma congratulated Prof. Syiemlieh, stating, “His life’s work has brought pride to the people of Meghalaya and the entire North East.”
Prof. Syiemlieh’s Padma Shri honour is a recognition of his dedication to preserving the historical and cultural narratives of a region often underrepresented in national discourse. His legacy continues to inspire students, historians, and educators across India.
