Prof. Ashutosh Sharma Awarded Padma Shri for Pioneering Contributions to Science and Engineering

Eminent scientist and nanotechnology expert Prof. Ashutosh Sharma has been conferred the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, for his exceptional contributions to the field of Science and Engineering.

A celebrated academic and policy leader, Prof. Sharma is a professor at IIT Kanpur and former Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. He has played a transformative role in advancing India’s capabilities in nanotechnology, soft matter physics, and interdisciplinary innovation ecosystems.

Prof. Sharma earned his B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur and pursued higher studies in the United States before returning to India to contribute to research and education. His research has significantly impacted the understanding and application of thin films, interfaces, self-assembled nanostructures, and colloid systems.

During his tenure as DST Secretary (2015–2021), Prof. Sharma launched several mission-mode programs, including those focused on cyber-physical systems, supercomputing infrastructure, and clean energy. He was also instrumental in mobilizing science-based responses to the COVID-19 pandemic through indigenous innovations and start-up collaborations.

Speaking on the award, Prof. Sharma said:

“I accept this honour with humility. It reflects the work of many dedicated individuals in science and engineering who strive every day to improve lives through research and innovation.”

He has previously been awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, TWAS Prize, Infosys Prize, and served as the President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
