Celebrated actor and Marathi cinema legend Shri Ashok Laxman Saraf has been awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, for his outstanding contribution to the field of Art. The award is a tribute to his unmatched legacy in regional and Hindi cinema, where he has brought laughter, depth, and emotion to millions over the past five decades.
Affectionately known as Ashok Mama, Saraf began his acting journey in the 1960s and quickly rose to prominence through a unique blend of impeccable comic timing and emotive performance. His memorable roles in films like Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi, Dhum Dhadaka, Chaukat Raja, and television shows like Hum Paanch have cemented his place as one of India’s most beloved actors.
Known as the “King of Marathi Comedy”, Saraf’s influence spans generations and continues to shape Marathi theatre, cinema, and television. His effortless ability to switch between comedic and serious roles earned him admiration from audiences and critics alike.
Earlier conferred with the Maharashtra Bhushan award in 2023, the Padma Shri is seen as a long-overdue national recognition of his extraordinary service to Indian cinema and cultural life.
