A 58-year-old Tennessee woman has officially earned a distinctive place in the record books, claiming the title of the world’s longest competitive mullet for a female. Tami Manis, a public health nurse from Knoxville, boasts a truly remarkable flowing mane that measures an astonishing 5 feet 8 inches (172.72 cm) – nearly the height of the average man.
Ms. Manis’s unique hairstyle journey began in the 1980s, sparked by inspiration from a music video by the American rock band ‘Til Tuesday. Since then, she has not cut her hair in an incredible 33 years, dedicating decades to cultivating her record-breaking mullet. Her iconic look is set to be immortalized in the upcoming 2024 edition of the Guinness World Records book.
Recounting the origins of her distinctive coiffure, Ms. Manis told Guinness World Records that her mullet journey commenced roughly four decades ago after watching the music video for the song “Voices Carry.” “The girl had a rattail and I really wanted one of those,” she explained.
However, her commitment to the style wasn’t without a brief pause. She initially cut her mullet off in November 1989 but immediately regretted the decision. Consequently, she began growing it back the following February and has maintained its length ever since, culminating in this unique world record.
