In an inspiring feat of endurance and purpose, Joe Cartwright, an NHS paramedic from Dunstable, Bedfordshire, and David Haze, a former city trader and reformed prisoner from Bournemouth, have completed a world record attempt by crossing the English Channel on a tandem paddleboard in just 4 hours and 48 minutes.
The daring crossing, aimed at raising awareness and funds for suicide prevention, marks a significant personal and public achievement for both men. The current attempt is awaiting official verification by Guinness World Records, but is believed to be the fastest tandem paddleboard crossing of the Channel to date.
Cartwright, 49, is no stranger to bold challenges—this marks his third major adventure. He previously paddled across the Channel solo in 2022 and completed a 129-mile (208km) journey along the River Thames with Haze last year.
“It’s not just about the record,” said Cartwright. “We wanted to send a message that hope and recovery are always possible. This challenge is dedicated to those who are struggling in silence.”
David Haze, who has turned his life around through adventure and advocacy, echoed the sentiment, saying the journey symbolises second chances and mental strength.
Their accomplishment has drawn admiration from supporters across the UK, and donations are continuing to roll in for their chosen suicide prevention charities.
