The MSC IRINA, the world’s largest container ship by capacity, made its historic debut at Vizhinjam International Seaport on Monday, June 9, 2025. The vessel, renowned for its immense TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity, marked a significant milestone for South Asia’s port infrastructure by choosing Vizhinjam for its maiden call.
The ship, measuring over 400 meters in length and capable of carrying more than 24,000 containers, docked in the early hours, symbolizing Vizhinjam’s readiness to handle ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs). According to port authorities, the MSC IRINA will remain berthed until Tuesday, offering an opportunity to showcase the port’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and deep-draft capabilities.
“This historic arrival highlights Vizhinjam’s strategic importance as a global maritime hub,” said a port spokesperson. “It’s a proud moment for India’s maritime sector, placing us firmly on the map for large-scale shipping.”
The arrival is expected to boost trade, logistics, and economic opportunities for Kerala and the nation, reinforcing Vizhinjam’s position as a game-changer in India’s maritime ambitions.
