A world-renowned environmental advocate known as the “Eco-Mermaid” made a dazzling appearance on the Sunshine Coast this weekend as part of her global tour promoting ocean conservation.
Merle Liivand, a Guinness World Record holder for the longest swim wearing a mermaid tail, captivated locals with her mission to raise awareness about plastic pollution and the urgent need to protect marine life. Known for blending athleticism and activism, Liivand swam over 42 kilometers in open water while dressed as a mermaid—an extraordinary feat that earned her global recognition.
During her visit, she engaged with local schools, participated in beach cleanups, and encouraged communities to reduce single-use plastics. “I want to be a voice for the ocean,” Liivand said. “Every swim is a message—we can no longer afford to turn our backs on the sea.”
Her visit was part of a larger environmental campaign across coastal regions, aiming to inspire a new wave of eco-conscious citizens.
