Saudi Arabia Unveils the World’s First “Sky Stadium” — Floating 350 Metres Above the Desert

Saudi Arabia is set to redefine the future of sports architecture with the announcement of the NEOM Stadium, a revolutionary venue that will be suspended an incredible 350 meters (1,150 feet) above the ground as part of its futuristic mega-city, NEOM. Dubbed the “Sky Stadium,” the project is poised to become a global icon of engineering and design.

The stadium, which boasts a proposed capacity of over 46,000 spectators, is integrated directly into the structure of The Line, the linear city currently under construction in the Tabuk province. This unique placement means that the stadium’s roof will be formed by the surrounding urban environment, giving fans an experience unlike any other.

Conceptualized as a centerpiece of the Kingdom’s bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the NEOM Stadium is being designed with cutting-edge technology and a strong emphasis on sustainability. Key features of the ambitious project include:

  • Elevated Pitch: The playing field will be situated high above the desert floor, offering panoramic views of The Line and the surrounding landscape, including the Red Sea.
  • Renewable Energy: The entire venue is planned to run completely on renewable energy sources, primarily generated from wind and solar power, aligning with NEOM’s zero-carbon blueprint.
  • Futuristic Access: Access to the Sky Stadium will be provided exclusively by high-speed elevators and autonomous electric vehicles, integrating it seamlessly into The Line’s vertical and horizontal transport network.
  • Advanced Technology: The stadium will incorporate state-of-the-art features such as e-ticket gates, Ultra HD broadcasting, and a fully digital fan experience.

Scheduled to begin construction in 2027 and target completion by 2032, the Sky Stadium represents the pioneering spirit of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy and establish the nation as a global hub for innovation, technology, and major international events.

Once the World Cup concludes, the NEOM Stadium is planned to serve as the permanent home for professional football clubs within The Line, anchoring a new sports-focused district dedicated to health and active living.
